Why did poverty persist in the US in an age of affluence?
The largest groups in the US were single, unsupported mothers and children, the elderly and people with health issues and addictions. these groups had difficulty earning a livable wage or even to work at all.
For much of US history many Americans felt poverty to be as much as a moral condition than economic problem.
At the same time society recognized that poverty could result from misfortune. The subcommittee on low income families proposed a 2000 dollars per year for families of all sizes.
