Storyboard Text

  • Protagonist - Billy Bloom
  • Antagonist - Bernie Balch
  • Theme
  • EXPRESS YOURSELF!!! BE FABULOUS!!!
  • Billy Bloom is a 17 year old gay, drag queen who is slightly over dramatic and humorous and believes everyone deserves to be treated equally. He is the new kid at Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy and is instantly bullied because of his personality. Billy's goal while at his new school is to make people realize he's not so different from the other students.
  • "Minute bled into minute, and they still kept on, never breaking rhythm. POW. POW. POW. More cracking sounds. Little sobbing grunts, made reflexively as they now targeted my lungs and kidneys" (85).
  • Although almost everyone at Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy is extremely rude to Billy, Bernie Balch is a reoccurring character who is always up to no good. Bernie is the person who leads everyone to do bad things to Billy, such as putting him into a coma.
  • "My movements were robot smooth, my expression otherworldly and serene, frozen in a glowing porcelain mask... I glided like a parade float, hither and yon. Wherever I went, I simply stopped time. People just froze" (82).
  • The theme of the story "Freak Show" by James St. James is to simply, just be yourself. This theme is shown not only by Billy, but by Flip who learns this from him. This is very important for readers to use in their lives every day.
  • "... Opening drawers, looking through cabinets. I am looking for something - I don't know what it is, but I will recognize it when I see it... Without Flip, I'm just a shell, a hat stand all dressed up" (185).
  • The scene where Billy gets beat up is very suspenseful for many reasons. It makes readers not only wonder what will happen to Billy and if he will be okay, but also what will happen to the students who beat him up.
  • This scene shows imagery because readers can see the way people stop and stare at Billy, along with how he is walking down the hallway to class. Readers can also picture Billy wearing a dress while walking.
  • This passage gives a strong mood of loneliness to the readers. Readers can understand how Billy feels and get the emotion of sadness because Billy feels useless without Flip.
