- Billy is hated by almost every student at Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy and is made fun of constantly throughout his classes. just because he expresses himself. Billy sits in the front of the biology room with all the football players and cheerleaders shooting spitballs and shouting at him.
- Climax
- Billy is put into a coma after wearing a dress and "tentacles" on his face to school. The class is then directed by Bernie to beat up Billy once Mr. Reamer, the biology teacher leaves the room. Mark or "Flip" Kelly runs into the classroom and saves Billy and the two become good friends because Mark went to the hospital every day to check on Billy.
- Falling Actions
- Billy goes back to school after recovering from his coma and other health issues and everyone is nice to him due to new school policies and the fact that Billy hangs out with Flip, the locally famous quarterback from the school team. Flip and Billy become closer friends and walk to every class together.
- Resolutions
- Flip goes over to Billy's house and says that they need to talk. Flip begins to state that Billy likes Bib Oberman, however, Billy denies and tells Flip that everything Flip believes he did for Bib was all for him because he likes Flip, not Bib. As the argument continues, Billy then kisses Flip and a bunch of people passing by Billy's mansion took pictures of them. Flip gets upset because he is apparently straight, and the two stop talking.
- Billy runs for homecoming queen to get back at everyone who was ever mean to him and to show the school that he was capable to do something that would change the face of Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy. Billy, Mary Jane, and the "shadow people" work together to make Billy great, putting him on the news, making posters, and getting students on his side, but in the end Billy loses to Lynette, the most popular girl in the school.

- Billy begins to believe that he shouldn't worry about what others think and he should be himself and stop acting like someone he isn't, and is then taken out of his day dream by Flossie telling him Flip is walking into the house. Flip and Billy talk about recent issues that occurred with Bernie jumping at Billy and Flip breaking his foot during a football game. Flip tells Billy that "He's the one" (298) before they both kiss.
