Dorothea Dix visited a Massachusetts asylum and was horrified at the conditions that these people had to live in.
Dix took her research about the conditions at the asylums to the Massachusetts legislature and demanded that changes be made.
Better asylum bill
Because of Dorothea Dix, extra funds were set aside for the asylums. The conditions greatly increased, and the mentally ill were treated properly and given special care.
