  • Public Asylums
  • Asylums were extremely dirty, and the mentally ill were housed with dangerous criminals.
  • Keepers had no rules about how they could treat patients. They chained them up, beat them, and kept them in animal pens.
  • Dorothea Dix visited a Massachusetts asylum and was horrified at the conditions that these people had to live in.
  • Dix took her research about the conditions at the asylums to the Massachusetts legislature and demanded that changes be made.
  • Better asylum bill
  • Because of Dorothea Dix, extra funds were set aside for the asylums. The conditions greatly increased, and the mentally ill were treated properly and given special care.
