In 1957, the first satellite called Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union. This lead to new scientific, military and scientific developments.

1969 saw the development of Arpanet. This was the first real network to run packet switching technology, allowing computers to connect and send messages.

In 1974 a proposal was published to link networks together in a "inter-work" proving that data could be transported between them. This is called CCP/IP.
In the 1970's email and the @ sign was created and popularised.
In 1991 the first web page was developed. Its purpose was to explain how the world wide web worked.
The 2000's saw the development of many social media platforms and apps, the fist (SixDegrees) releasing in 1997.
