Jem, Scout, and their lawyer father Atticus live in Maycomb, AL. They live in a regular town with regular neighbors except for the strange Arthur (Boo) Radley on the corner. Their best friend Dill comes to visit each summer.
Because Jem and Scout's mother had passed away, Calpurnia worked for Atticus as their cook and nanny. She became a mother figure to Jem and Scout. Their neighbors also had an influence on them and their lives.
Their dad defends a black man Tom Robinson against false charges made by a white man Tom Ewell. Though Atticus proved Tom's innocence, due to the social inequality, he is found guilty. However, Tom Ewell was embarassed by Atticus and swears to get even with him.
