Joe Carp and Frank Reilly are making fun of Charlie but Charlie does not realize it so he laughs along with them.
Explaining the Conflict:
Near the end of the story, Joe and Frank stick up for Charlie when people made fun of him.
Joe said to Charlie, "Hey look where Charlie had his operation. What did they do Charlie? Put some brains in?" (pg. 227)
Frank went to Charlies house and said, "Charlie, if anybody bothers you or tries to take advantage of you, call me or Joe and we will set them straight." (pg. 243)
Examples relating to Conflict:
Frank then said to Charlie, "What did you do Charlie? Forget your key and open your door the hard way?" (pg. 227)
Miss Kinnian came to see Charlie but Charlie told her to go away because he didn't want to see her.
Charlie moved away and wrote a journal entry hoping Miss Kinnian read it.
According to Charlies journal, "Miss Kinnian came to the door but I said go away I don't want to see you. She cried and I cried too but I wouldn't let her in because I didn't want her to laugh at me." (p. 243)
