Storyboard Text

  • Quetzal, este pájaro te protegerá en caso de peligro.
  • ¡Maestro, Quetzal va a ser el rey!
  • ¡Entonces debo matarlo!
  • ¡Nooo! ¿Cómo puedes hacer esto...
  • ¡No dejaré que tomes mi trono! ¡Muérete!
  • A long time ago, Cacique, a powerful leader of the K’iche’ people, and his wife, gave birth to a young boy named Quetzal. A wise man favored him with a bird that will follow and protect Quetzal.
  • No puede ser...
  • ¡Gracias por salvarme! Si no fuera por ti, ya estaría muerto.
  • Chiruma, the younger brother of the chief, was jealous of Quetzal. The only way for Chiruma to become the chief was to get rid of his nephew, but he did not know that Quetzal was protected by the bird.
  • One night, when Quetzal was walking in the woods, Chiruma appeared with a sword. He stabbed Quetzal in the chest.
  • ¿Cómo puede ser? ¡Así que el pájaro lo ha estado protegiendo!
  • Por favor, no te mueras...
  • To his surprise, Quetzal did not die. The bird was protecting him all along. Quetzal thanked the bird, but his words were overheard by Chiruma's servant.
  • Chiruma's servant hurried back to the evil uncle. He told Chiruma everything he saw and heard. Chiruma is furious. He decided to kill Quetzal when the bird is not following.
  • The next day, when Quetzal was taking a bath in the river, Chiruma did not see the bird around. So he began to attack the unarmed Quetzal. However, before the sword striked his chest, the bird suddenly appeared and blocked the sword, taking its life away.
  • From then on, all birds with red feathers in the middle of their bodies are named as Quetzal birds.
