Hi! I'm Sarah! Today we're gong to walk through reception, transduction, and response with the Vitamin D receptor (VDR). When I go play outside in the sun, I receive vitamin D thanks to my vitamin D receptor! Let's take a look on what happens inside of my cells when this happens
There are 4 types of cell signaling:
gap junctions (only in animal cells)
paracrine
response
complimentary surface proteins
complimentary
direct contact
response
endocrine
autocrine
bloodstream
hormones
complimentary
If we didn't have a vitamin D receptor that regulates our calcium, our bone density weakens which makes us more vulnerable to breaks and factures. In children, if we have a vitamin D deficiency, our bones weaken and we could even get rickets :(, which shows the importance of the vitamin D receptor and its role within the body.
