In1609, people wanted freedom. So they asked the king if they could sail to unknown lands to claim the land for the king. He granted them permission so they sailed off and landed in the New World.
When they arrived in the New World they didn't know a thing about what or who inhabited the area. They weren't prepared for what could/would happen, only because they didn't send someone to scout the area when they had landed.
Little did the people know that they weren't the only people in the area. Anyways, they had many difficult times. The women had to do a lot and the men had to do a lot also. Everyone was busy.
The women had to take care of the men and the children, they had to be nurses and take care of the sick and wounded, they had to nurture and raise the livestock, and last but not least they had to take care of the crops. The women also had to cook meals, even on a hot day. The men have it a little less stressful. The men hunt wild animals, they trap small game and last of all they have to protect the women and the elderly.
When winter no settler was prepared. There was much pain, suffering, deaths, and sicknesses. The result of the loss of the ships that was transporting goods back and forth was catastrophic. Many people died because of the lack of food and the harsh weather. Over hundreds had died that winter.
During this time it was known as The Starving Time. This is because of the problem with the ships sinking in the storms. The ships were their only means of transportation other than the horse (of course). They were starving also because they didn't know how to irrigate the land. That is the story of the Jamestown starvation.
