- Each of the four main directions in which it's possible to move while on a surface is called the cardinal points; these four cardinal points are north, south, east and west.
- NORTHNorth or Midnight, the point opposite to the South; it's indicated with the letter N.
- EASTEast or Levant, the point where the Sun rises; it's indicated with the letter E.
- SOUTHSouth or Midday, the highest point reached by the Sun; it's indicated with the letter S.
- WESTWest the point where the Sun sets; it's indicated with the letter O.
