Jim and Della loved each other but they were very poor. It was Christmas day and as Jim left for work, Della counted the money she had saved. Only $1.87.
Della looked in the mirror and let down her hair. It was gorgeous and one of their two valuable possessions, the other being Jim's pocket watch. Suddenly, Della had an idea. She would sell her hair to buy Jim the perfect Christmas present.
How much would you buy my hair for?
...Give it to me quick.
Della, ashamed of her new haircut but with $20 more in her pockets, set out to find a gift for Jim. She passed by a shop and saw the perfect, simple watch chain.
I'll take it.
How much for the watch chain?
Dreading his reaction, she finally heard him come home. He was shocked and confused but she gave him his gift and he gave her hers. He had gotten her combs for her hair and sold his pocket watch to buy them.
They had both sold their most valuable possessions to make the other one happy. In the end, they simply proved just how much they love each other.
