Storyboard Text

  • Well Katie, Valium, also known as diazepam is a prescription drug. It is a benzodiazepine and a sedative. On the streets it is known as Vallies, Jellies, Moggies, or Eggs.
  • Mom, What is Valium? I heard a couple kids talking about it at school 
  • Valium was created by Hoffman-La Roche. It was synthesized in 1959, and then in 1963 it began to be sold. It quickly became the most popular and top selling pharmaceutical in the U.S. It was marketed to "reduce psychic tension"
  • What is the history behind Valium, Mom?
  • There are couple ways they can use it. It can be injected into the vein or muscle, it can be taken orally,either as a pill or a concentrated solution, or it can even be used as a rectal gel. Katie, it's getting late so why don't we head upstairs.
  • The history behind it is very interesting but how do people even use it?
  • Katie comes home from school one day after overhearing some kids talking about a drug called Valium. She is interested to know what it is so she asks her mother about it. Her mother explains to her daughter what Valium is. She wanted to make sure her daughter knew exactly what it was so she can be safe and make good choices.
  • The drug itself is not bad, but it can often be abused. It has many long and short term effects.
  • After everything you have told me, I don't understand why people say its so bad?
  • Katie asks her mom about the history of the drug Valium. Her mother explains when and by whom it was created and marketed. She also explains what it was marketed as and how popular it became.
  • The drug decreases activity in the nervous system and the high from the drug includes, euphoria, lack or coordination and concentration, and the feeling of being drunk.
  • What short term effects does it have?
  • After learning the history of Valium, Katie is very interested to learn more about it. She asks her mother how people take Valium and her mother explains all the different methods of its use. The two of them have been talking for a while and it's getting late so they decide to head upstairs.
  • Long term, valium can effect memory, cause hallucinations, effect breathing, slow your pulse, and even lead to comas and heart attacks.
  • What about the long term effects?
  • Katie is confused why people are so scared of the drug and say it is dangerous and her mother explains that the drug itself is actually beneficial to some people, but it becomes dangerous when it is unprescribed and abused.
  • Katie's mother explains to her the short-term effects of using valium. She tells her about how people feel while they are high on the drug.
  • Katie wonders about the long-term effects of using valium so her mother explains all the dangerous things that can happen in the long term if people take this dangerous drug.
