- The Cave symbolizes The World of Appearances.The shadows represent the imperfect forms of the World of Appearances.The Prisoners represent the people in the material world who choose to believe those shadows are reality.The chains symbolize them not having concrete knowledge which enables them to form absolute personal judgments regarding the "forms" they see.According to metaphysics, Plato defines reality by dividing it into two realms, the world of senses (cave) and the world of the forms (outside the cave).Plato argues that we all possess innate knowledge within us and that everything we learn is just a recollection and this relates back to epistemology, which emphasizes the aspects of acquiring knowledge.
