  • Staph is a type of bacteria. These live harmlessly on many skin surfaces, especially around the nose, mouth, genitals, and anus. But if the skin is punctured or broken, staph bacteria can enter the wound and cause an infection.

  • In 1880, Alexander Ogston, a Scottish surgeon, discovered that staph can cause wound infections after noticing groups of bacteria in pus from a surgical abscess during a procedure he was performing.
  • MRSA stands for methicillin- resistant staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacteria that is resistant to several antibiotics.
  • MRSA is usually spread in the community by contact with infected people or things that are carrying the bacteria. This includes through contact with a contaminants wound of by sharing personal items, such as towels or razors, that have touched infected skin.
  • Treatment for staph infections is antibiotic. Depending on the type of infection, you may get a cream, ointment, medicines, or intravenous. If you have an infected wound, your provider might drain it. Sometimes you may need surgery for bone infections
