Character vs. Character
Salva and many others must bring as much water as they can in order to survive the long journey to get to Ethiopia. In this part if the journey, Salva and the group he is traveling with must cross into the desert. Salva brings his gourd that the old women gave him along the journey , only drinking water when it was absolutely necessary. Other men in Salva's group struggled, wetting pieces of clothing in order to obtain water for the difficult journey. When they reach their destination they are presented with food and water.
After Salva's uncle dies, it leaves a big impact on him. The group complains that Salva is too small and young to continue his journey. They teased him about his crying in the desert, and they were certain that he would do it again. Unlike uncle, the people in Salva's group never shared their food with him, and he was forced to beg for scraps. Salva then feels stronger than ever, realizing that he must do things on his own. Salva knew that Marial and his uncle would want him to continue his journey.
A few men with weapons approach Salva and his group. Shortly after, Salva realizes the men are from the Nuer because of the markings on their foreheads. The men force people from the group to remove their clothing, give them their weapons, stole anything from inside their bags, captured their leader (Salva's uncle), and tied him to tree. The men shot Salva's uncle three times, killing him. They bury their leader, mourned, and stopped walking for a whole day. Salva feels more determined.
