Storyboard Text

  • Act 1: Sister is Mean
  • Are you ready?! Mom and Dad are going to drive us soon!!!
  • Also, what are you wearing? Name one boy who wears pink.. don't come to me when you get made fun of.
  • Yes yes yes!! Relax!!
  • Can you chill? It's literally just a colour.
  • Act 2: Parents are Nice
  • Don't worry sweetie! You're gonna do great, as long as you try your best, that's all that matters.
  • Mom, dad, I have a test today and I'm really nervous. What if I do horrible.
  • If I don't do good on this test, I will never get a real job. I will be a failure and dead broke.
  • Act 3: Friends are Nervous
  • Are you guys ready for the test?
  • I am gonna fail
  • I'm nervous... I studied so much. Do you guys want to hang out after school?
  • Yeah. for sure!
  • Zeke! Watch your language!!
  • And before you guys bug me about wearing pink, you can kiss my bum.
  • This morning, Liz and her brother Zeke are getting ready for school. Liz seems to have something negative to say about Zeke's clothes. Liz implies that Zeke wearing pink is weird. This a simple example of gender roles. Liz has the expectation that pink is a 'girl's colour' and Zeke should not be wearing it. Gender roles emphasize the set of behaviours that are expected while being male or female. This learned mindset may have been given to her since birth, in many ways.
  • Act 4: Hopeful in One Way or Another
  • I hope to do good on this test. Mrs. Jones really believes in me and knows that I can do it, she even spoke to me personally, I can't let her down.
  • I hope we have a sub and this test gets cancelled
  • I feel really good about that test, I think I did well. Mrs. Jones will be proud.
  • As Liz and Zeke are on their way to school, with both their parents in the front seat, Zeke expresses how he feels about an upcoming test. Even with the support from his parents, Zeke still thinks that if he does not do well, he will not succeed in life. This is an example of the hidden curriculum. Zeke has the notion that doing good in school is a make it or break it factor of his success. The hidden curriculum will be successful when Zeke realizes there are many other factors such as race, gender, and class, all have significant effect.
  • Act 5: Zeke discouraging Jake
  • I definitley didn't do good on that test. I left a couple questions blank.
  • Zeke if you're not gonna do it, give it to me. I do it all the time...stop being a goody two shoes.
  • Before class, Zeke and some of his friends gather by the school. Zeke says something that majority of the kids would take as a joke but quickly is told it is innapropriate by a teacher. This scene is an active example of secondary socialization. Zeke is surrounded by other kids, and is being taught how to speak appropriately in the situation. At home, he was more respectful to his sister, when she had something to say and that may be because he has already learned the boundaries. Though at school there is a new set of rules to behaviour that he must conform too as well.
  • Act 6: Peer Pressure
  • I don't know... I don't think I should. What if my parents find out.
  • Hey Zeke, wanna try vaping? You just suck on it, trust me it feels super cool
  • Everyone is in class now, about to take the big test, and Deja is having some thoughts. Deja has been speaking to Mrs. Jones regularly and Mrs. Jones is expressing how she believes in Deja and expects her to do well. This is an example of the self-fulfillingprophecy, an expectation that helps to cause what it predicts. Often when teachers expectations are high of students, their performance improves as well.
  • Zeke
  • Deja
  • Jake
  • Zeke, Jake and Deja meet in the hallway after the test. They have a short conversation about how things went, and Jake feels he didn't do well. Instead of Zeke saying anything comforting, he tells Jake it doesn't matter, he is a bad kid anyway, and makes poor decisions. If the Thomas Theorem were in effect, "situations we define as real become real in their consequences," this could mean that Jake will move forward and continue/begin behaving as a bad kid. In addition, Deja's thoughts read that she did very well, which may be due to the uplift from Mrs. Jones, an effect of the self-fulfilling prophecy.
  • Who cares?! You're a bad kid anyway, it's not like your parents care. No one expects you to do good. My parents will actually be disappointed if I don't do well.
  • After school, everyone meets up at the park to hangout. Deja takes out a vape pen, and offers it to Zeke, he hesitates, but with everyones banter, he eventually decides to try it. This is an example of Zekes peer group. Everyone is of similar age and status, this is where Zeke is away from family and able to create his own identity. This is also where rejecting parental values, as well as rebellious behaviour may occur, like in the scene. To add, Jakes comment about vaping all the time, can be interpereted as the Thomas Theorem, he is continuing his negative behaviour, potentially due to Zekes comment about him being a bad kid.
  • Alright, fine.
  • Hahahahaha do it Zeke!
