- The crisis resulted from the new taxation system imposed by the Persians. The Persian ruler Darius (522-486 BC) decreed that taxes should be paid in hardcurrency.
- Farmers had first to sell their crops and then pay a fixed sum out of the proceeds of the transaction. Those who could not raise the needed cash to pay the tax were obliged to go into debt and mortgage their property.
- Some were reduced even to selling their children into foreign slavery to pay off their debts to their fellow Jews, who seemed only too eager to exploit their difficulty.
