  • WALBROOKINSTITUTE
  • In Rain Man, we are first introduced to Charlie, a young man with a focus on making big business deals and big amounts of money. He is on his way to a vacation with his girlfriend when he finds out that his father has passed away. This ultimately diverts his vacation and sends him back to Cincinnati where he is from. Upon arriving to Cincinnati, Charlie finds out that his father has left him his car, but his father's estate is left to someone else, a mysterious beneficiary.
  • Leaving Cincinnati
  • Charlie then learns of the Walbrook Institute, the location of the mysterious beneficiary. A man notices Charlie's fathers car and seems fixated on it, he eventually gets in the car and sits in it. We come to learn that this man is Raymond, a patient at Walbrook. Raymond seems to know the car that Charlie is driving and knows specific information about the car and Charlie's family. After some dialogue, we learn that Raymond is Charlie's long lost brother.

  • Charlie has little patience for his brother and does not understand his diagnosis of autism or savant syndrome. As they get to knw each other, Raymond shows Charlie his exceptional mind and his ability to memorize many facts, but Charlie is not very receptive. After spending a little more time with his brother, Charlie decides to selfishly take Raymond from Walbrook and take him to Los Angeles to figure out the details of the estate.
  • After leaving Walbrook, Charlie becomes very frustrated by Raymond and his routines. Charlie views Raymond as being difficult to deal with, when the true issue is that Charlie has not taken the time to really get to know his brother. Raymond exhibits attributes that are consistent with individuals with autism; exceptional memory, repeated phrases, and some unusual routines. These attributes can be difficult for loved ones to understand and support those with autism but it is so vital for a successful life.
  • Raymond does not adjust to change well and expresses his dislike and frustration with their hotel. Raymond, like many individuals with autsim, is very routine based. He eats at certain times and has certain foods on certain days. Charlie decides that the quickest way to get to Los Angeles is to fly there, but Raymond refuses to fly. This again creates a disagreement between the brothers and causes Charlie to feel even more frustrated, which is again caused by a lack of truly knowing his brother.
