Storyboard Text

  • At home vikings were farmers...
  • At sea they were vicious pillagers...
  • In 793 they meet England...
  • And smash up a monastery
  • (Home being Scandinavia mainly, and other Northern countries like Norway, Sweden and Denmark later...)
  • But terrifyingly, sometimes they just want to trade...
  • But of course Vikings didn't see it as a bad thing to do, they believed stealing was an honourable way to get fame and riches, if they didn't steal from each other.
  • In 865AD, they conquered the English kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia.
  • The attack on Lindisfarne in 793AD is definitely an accurate example of the Viking relationship in England.
  • In 866AD they take East Anglia from the Saxons
  • Their tendency to both trade and attack others was part of what made them so terrifying to their enemies. When the English saw their ships on the shore was it to trade, or attack?
  • This means that Viking presence is spreading across England for the conquering, not just thieving.
  • At this point they control a lot of important English places.
