Montag is a fireman, and there job is to burn houses that they find books in. He just does his job every day and enjoys doing it.
On the way home from work one day Montag runs into a girl that lives down the street from him. She is a very curious girl, and her house is filled with lights and laughter, an unusual thing in there city. She asks him if he is happy, with his life, and this is when he starts to question his job as a fireman.
Montag realizes that burning books really is a bad thing when he burns a lady with her books because she refuses to leave her books.
Beatty, the captain fireman finds out that Montag has been steeling books , so he goes to burn Montag's house down, and Montag ends up burning Beatty, who dies. Mildred leaves Montag.
Montag stops at Faber's house while he is on the run from having books and killing Beatty. Faber tells him to go to the country and follow the railroad tracks.
Montag goes to the country where he meets a few of the people that follow the railroad tracks up and down talking to lots of people, and sharing books and stories that they memorized.
