To start the light reaction, light strikes a chlorophyll molecule in PSII and excites an electron to a higher energy state. The sun is hitting the trees, where the light reaction is occurring.
PSII
Wow!! I'm excited! I wonder where this ETC train is taking me?
This electron (red circle) enters a protein complex called the Electron Transport Chain (train). The ETC transfers the electron to lower and lower states.
Thank You Electron!
Thylakoid Space
I was on the ETC Train, and I met some H+ ions (blue circles) who wanted to get off at the thylakoid space, so I helped them by using my energy to push them off!
Want some energy?
Light strikes another chlorophyll molecule, this time in PSI. An electron from PSI gets excited and passed to the outside of the thylakoid.
I'm excited to go!
PSI
So you're my replacement from PSII? Looks like they'll hire anyone nowadays.
To outside of thylakoid
The electron that is passed to the outside of the thylakoid is replaced by the electron from the ETC.
Well, you wouldn't have needed to be replaced if you didn't get so excited that you just had to move outside the thylakoid.
