I'm glad you decided to be here and learn about the wild plants and animals that surround us.
You may think you have to be out in the woods to see wildlife.
Fauna means the animals you see. like a baby deer, fawn.
Flora refers to the plants around you... just remember "flower"
But you can find plenty of flora and fauna right in your own neighborhood.
Even the white tailed deer were in danger….
When this country was first founded, the people thought the land was boundless (without end)…
So they exploited, or used to their advantage without thinking about the impact they had, the wildlife,
Which led to the extinction—the dying out of a whole species-- of some flora and fauna.
Market Hunters killed as many animal in the wild as they could for money, even if they killed the very last member of a species.
Making it illegal to hunt certain animals at certain times of the year did not work.
It was the Sport Hunters that pushed to end the commercialization (use for profit) of wildlife and better laws for protecting these animals.
This was the beginning of our conservation—protecting natural resources from waste—efforts.
It was the Lacey Act in 1900 that finally made the difference. It hit the Market Hunters where it hurt… they might still hunt illegally, but they could not take the wildlife products (pelts, feathers, meat) across state lines.
