Parliament wanted to rule and hated Catholics - they were some very strict Protestants. They were shocked when Charles I came to the thrown and didn't ease the tensions, instead he made it worse by closing parliament for 10 years. Charles I wanted to be in charge and married a French Catholic, which as you can assume, didn't go down well with the people of England and started off the English Civil War when they brought out the 19 Propositions, the final straw for Charles.
In 1642, in Nottingham, the English Civil War officially started, with the Cavaliers (King Charles - linking with the Spaniels) and Round-Heads (Parliamentarians) started fighting in the English Civil War, with the Cavaliers doing well at first until the Round-Heads brought on a new idea: organised soldiers! They continued fighting though until the King lost when the Scots (who he tried to team up with) gave him to the round-heads.
Cromwell was leader, the Scots hated him so teamed up with Charles but still lost. So the King's lost but what's going to happen to him? He'll have a trial of course, they aren't animals. Oh wait yes they are because it's unfair and completely rigged against him with random charges! He got no lawyer or anyone on his side so you can understand how similar (not) it is to today! They also then made people sign his death warrant and executed him.
They couldn't have a leaderless country could they so Oliver Cromwell, a strict Puritan guy, became leader. Wait a sec, he was really awful and then died. The End, but not really because his son, Richard was weak so another King ruled England again, Charles II who fled to Holland from the people trying to kill his father and the Catholics brought back. He enjoyed partying and made England a happy place again!
He died without a legitimate heir, ending the Restoration, despite having many children so his Catholic brother James II got the throne but the people of England hated him so tried to make it illegal which didn't work so instead got the Duke of Monmouth to fight him and become King but he got defeated and therefore executed.
In 1688 the Glorious Revolution started after James II had a son, James III who guaranteed a Catholic Future for England. The English people got William of Orange, the husband of James II's previous wife's daughter who beat James II and took over. They both became joint King and Queen of England.
