  • What is federalism
  • Federalism is a compound government between the National Government and Sate Government.
  • How do you know this?
  • Do we still use Federalism today?
  • James Maddison said, "In the compound republic of America, the power surrendered by the people is first divided between two distinct governments, and then the portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate departments. Hence a double security arises to the rights of the people. The different governments will each control each other, at the same time that each will be controlled by itself."
  • Is there anything they both can do?
  • Yes, the State Governments can set up local governments, hold elections, and establish schools. While the National Governments can regulate trade, declare war, and print money.
  • They can both borrow money, set up courts, and make laws.
  • So how does this guard against tyranny?
  • Well, there are two different groups, so one group doesn't hold all the power.
  • This was a great learning experience!
  • Maybe we can do it again sometime!
  • Your Welcome!
  • WOW! Now I know all about Federalism. Thanks!
