  • Rising Action 2
  • The story opens with the antagonist, who is the narrator, telling the listener that he can prove his sanity by how calmly he can tell us how he murdered an old man. The narrator is unreliable because he claims that he has a disease that allows him to hear things in heaven, the earth, and in hell but then contradicts himself by saying he can healthily tell us the whole story. He tells us that his motivator for murder is simply the old mans "vulture eye."
  • Climax
  • The narrator watches old man in his sleep for 7 nights to see if the vulture eye is open so he can gain the confidence to kill him. Every night he thrusts he head into the door and opens it just a tiny bit so a thin ray of light shines onto the old mans eye. The next morning he asks the old man how he laughed. He thinks the old man would have to be very profound to guess what is going on. On the eighth night, the narrator thinks about how cunning he is and how powerful he is and chuckles and stifled laugh.
  • Falling Action
  • *Knock Knock*
  • After he chuckles the old man wakes up and stays alert for an hour. The narrator, who is over confident, fingers slip on the lantern and it makes a noise. The narrator soon starts to think he hears the old mans heart beat. After about an one hour standoff between the narrator and the old man the heartbeat starts getting faster and faster and then the narrator sees the old mans eye. The heartbeat gets so fast and loud the narrator fears it would be heard through out the whole neighborhood and this vexed the old man.

  • One the narrator saw the old mans eye he leaped out from the crevice of the door and yelled causing the old man to shriek. He grabbed the old man and suffocated him under the heavy mattress.
  • YAY!
  • After the narrator killed him he starts to explain the wise precautions he took to hide the body. He first took the body to the bathtub and chopped of its limbs and its head. After that he hides the body under the floorboards in the old mans bedroom. After he did that he heard a knock at the door and it was the police. He invites them in gleefully because he his sure they will never find the body.

  • While he was being arrogant he asked them to come and sit but he foolishly put the chairs right on top of the old mans death place. He started hearing what he thought was the old mans heart. As it got louder and louder he started going insane. He was ranting and then just couldn't take enough of what he saw as the police's hypocritical smiles and ripped of the floorboards and revealed the old mans body parts.
