Storyboard Text

  • Thomas Gallaudet and Alice Cogswell were neighbors. Gallaudet noticed that Alice was deaf and he was the inspiration for his journey on starting the firt school in America for the Deaf
  • This is a Hat.
  • Gallaudet travels to England in hopes of finding methods of teaching the Deaf. He goes to the Braidwood school but they are unwilling to share their methods.
  • Gallaudet sails to France looking for other methods. There he meets Laurent Clerc. He asks Clerc to come back to America and teach the Deaf population.

  • On their way back to America Gallaudet taught Clerc English and Clerc taught Gallaudet French Sign Language. Martha's Vineyard Sign Language was another large contributor to ASL today.
  • This is confusing.
  • Martha's Vineyard was an island were the Deaf gene was passed down to so many people that sign language was a main for of communication. Even hearing people would communicate by signing.
  • In 1817, Hartford, Connecticut the first Deaf school was established. It was know as the American School for the Deaf. It founded by Gallaudet and Clerc. The first student was Alice Cogswell.
