Storyboard Text

  • It became my life's work to advocate for the Deaf and provide Deaf people with education.
  • Hi! My name is Thomas Gallaudet! I was born in 1787 in Philadelphia, PA.
  • My passion started in 1814 when I met Alice Cogswell, a young Deaf girl.
  • I was so inspired I travelled to France to study the ways of Deaf education. I met Laurent Clerc, a fellow educator.
  • We returned to the United States with the hope of founding it's very first Deaf school.
  • We succeeded with our goal. In 1817, we opened the American School for the Deaf.
  • I passed away in 1851 in Hartford, CT. But I fulfilled my goal.
  • I left behind a legacy creating and inspiring generations of educated Deaf Americans.
  • In 1864, my son founded Gallaudet University. To this day, it is the only internationally based school solely dedicated to Deaf/HOH students!
