Storyboard Text
It became my life's work to advocate for the Deaf and provide Deaf people with education.
Hi! My name is Thomas Gallaudet! I was born in 1787 in Philadelphia, PA.
My passion started in 1814 when I met Alice Cogswell, a young Deaf girl.
I was so inspired I travelled to France to study the ways of Deaf education. I met Laurent Clerc, a fellow educator.
We returned to the United States with the hope of founding it's very first Deaf school.
We succeeded with our goal. In 1817, we opened the American School for the Deaf.
I passed away in 1851 in Hartford, CT. But I fulfilled my goal.
I left behind a legacy creating and inspiring generations of educated Deaf Americans.
In 1864, my son founded Gallaudet University. To this day, it is the only internationally based school solely dedicated to Deaf/HOH students!
