Historical figures arguing over democracy

Storyboard Text

  • Ideas of Democracy
  • One day at a bar....
  • This political climate has went down the toilet
  • Out of all the jokes in the world, democracy has to be the biggest!
  • ugh I'd rather there be complete anarchy!
  • The bar shook from Michels' opinion
  • Well that's what it can turn into. It almost never works out long term.
  • Whats their problem?
  • How do you not like Democracy? This is getting embarrassing.
  • oh no..Will this be the start of a debate?
  • You know, I really don't believe either of you have any expertise in what a democracy is.
  • Socrates!
  • It's not a hard concept. If there's any gaps in your understanding, we can debate this.
  • uhhh excuse me? Who are you to tell me what I know and don't know?
  • I can argue all night bub!
  • Let's bet on it. We'll see how enlightened you truly are
  • Socrates
  • John Locke
  • One moment later..
  • Robert Michels
  • Cleisthenes
  • Welcome to Drunken Debates everyone! Im your host, The Bartender! Let's meet our stars for tonight's debate!
  • In order to truly understand what a Democracy is, y-you need to know the basic concepts of one...
  • Alright, the pro-democracy team may go first.
  • Why Democracy is great
  • The Individual has a great importance in a Democracy. However, sometimes the welfare of one or a few individuals is compromised for the interests of all the majority in a Democracy. Overall, the individual has a say in any aspect, such as the voting in elections. Democracy must serve everyone as a collection of ones, not just one big group.
  • Democracy may not be perfect, but it has great intentions. An important concept would be The Fundamental Worth of the Individual. Each Individual is a separate distinct being no matter what. Democracy insists that every person's worth and dignity must be recognized and respected,by all other individuals and society at all times.

  • Fundamental Worth of Individual
  • Do either of you have a rebuttal?
  • Why Democracy isn't all that great.
  • YES I DO, AND A GREAT ONE AT THAT!!
  • It is the principle that all forms of organization, regardless of how Democratic they may be at the start, will eventually develop oligarchic traits. The ultimate goal of eliminating elite rule is dang near impossible! An oligarchy is almost inevitable. Since most large and complex organizations can't function purely as a direct democracy, they rely on representatives.
  • Iron Law of Oligarchy
  • Your "Fundamental Worth" is simply a short term facade. Have you ever heard of the "Iron Law"?
  • In a representative democracy, a "leadership class" is formed with the use of administrators and executives. The elected have the final say over the electors. This ruling class will inevitably have more worth than the individuals who elected them.
  • Yea but that can easily be solved with system of checks and balances. No representative can abuse their power. And we could keep potential abusers of power out of office with compromise...
  • Why Democracy is great
  • Anything to say, pro-democracy?
  • Compromise is an essential part of a Democracy. The individual is always put first and each individual is equal to each other. These representatives are a reflection of what the people want, and can easily vote them out of office worst case. With a society of many conflicting opinions, decisions are made with the interests of the mass majority. If the majority doesn't want an oligarchy, they won't get an oligarchy! And topics such as equality of persons-should never be the subject of any compromise!
  • Voting and compromising on results keeps those who potentially want to abuse their power out of office. Besides, these representatives can have a limited amount of time in their position. Public decision making must largely be a matter of give and take among competing interests.
  • Necessity to Compromise
  • Does anti-democracy have another argument?
  • Of course compromise is a good thing, by why should I compromise with people who have no prior knowledge of the political world?
  • Why Democracy isn't all that great.
  • Think about society like a ship heading out to sea. Who would you want in charge of the vessel? Just anyone or people who were educated in the rules and mechanics of seafaring?
  • Voting in an election is a skill and not random intuition. And like any skill, it must be taught to people. Letting just anyone vote is as irresponsible as letting anyone drive the ship. There are plenty of politicians who don't have our best interests at heart, so we can't just let anyone go out and vote.
  • Elections need educated voters
  • OH.. so you're saying only a certain privileged class of people can vote huh?
  • WHA-NO! That's not what I'm completely saying...
  • You're basically implying you're classist!
  • uh oh...
  • Well we don't tolerate sheeple voting!
  • WOAH WOAH WOAH!!
  • I don't tolerate classists like you!
  • What do I care? Your system is bound to fail anyway..
  • Hours of arguing continued until the bar was empty
  • AND STAY OUT OF MY BAR, YOU DRUNKARDS!
  • Yea whatever..
  • Agree to disagree?
  • The End?
