Storyboard Text

  • "I do, Your Honor."
  • "Candidates for scythe hood, will you accept the judgement of the MidMerican bejeweling committee?"
  • "So do I, Your Honor."
  • "Then let it be known, that now, and forevermore . . . Citra Terranova shall wear the ring of scythehood, and bear the burden of all the ring entails."
  • "Congratulations, Citra. I knew you would do it."
  • "I choose to be known as Scythe Anastasia. After the youngest member of the family Romanov."
  • "Exactly why I chose her, Your Excellency. She was the product of a corrupt system, and because of that, was denied her very life- as I almost was."
  • "Miss Terranova, I can't say that is an appropriate choice. The czars of Russia were known more for their excess than their contribution to civilization- and Anastasia Romanov did nothing of note in her short life."
  • Citra Terranova and Rowan Damisch stand face to face with one another before High Blade Xenocrates, bracing themselves as he prepares to announce which of them shall hence onwards be regarded as "Scythe" - a title they have been competing for for months (Shusterman 427).
  • "This, is for breaking my neck."
  • OOF!
  • "It's Honorable Scythe Anastasia to you. And I don't know what you're talking about. it was an accident."
  • High Blade Xenocrates declares Citra a Scythe; she is overwhelmed by shock and disbelief. Knowing that he must be gleaned as a result of losing the competition for scythe hood to Citra, Rowan congratulates her (Shusterman 427).
  • "STOP! He can't be gleaned. He has immunity."
  • "You're a genius, Citra. You know that, don't you?"
  • High Blade Xenocrates bestows upon Citra an Immunity Ring, which signifies her newly found power and capabilities as Scythe. She chooses Anastasia Romanov to be her Patron Historic, or who her Scythe name shall be based off of. When High Blade Xenocrates debunks this, claiming her Patron Historic lacks prominence, Citra argues that this is solely because her Patron Historic was never given the chance to rise to such prominence, tying in her own experiences with a similar struggle as well (Shusterman 428).
  • "How are you not dead?"
  • 'I could ask you the same question, but time is of the essence. Now please, close the door."
  • Citra is required to glean her former opponent as a result of defeating him in the competition for scythe hood. However, instead of killing Rowan as she is mandated to, she first punches him in the mouth, claiming vengeance against him for breaking her neck prior in the novel (Shusterman 430).
  • Rowan soon realizes Citra intentionally punched him in the mouth with her immunity ring so that the DNA contained in his blood would be transmitted to the immunity database, granting him immunity and preventing him from being gleaned for an entire year. She saved his life, risking her own, newly found position in the process (Shusterman 431).
  • Recognizing this to be the perfect moment for Rowan to escape with his life- in wake of a distracted conclave of Scythes still reeling from shock of the day's events- Citra hands Rowan a tray of knives and informs him that there is a car waiting for him outside. He grabs them and immediately runs, maneuvering flawlessly around a crowd of Scythes attempting to refrain him but miserably failing. When he reaches the car, Rowan finds Scythe Faraday in the driver's seat, whom he had thought to be deceased. Together, they ride off and away from the conclave (Shusterman 433).
