The protagonist of the story is Billy Weaver. He is looking for a cheap place to stay while he is in Bath, England for business. The time of day is night, so he does not have much time.
When Billy arrives, the landlady answers the door fast, almost too fast. She seems very suspicious but Billy ignores it. Billy gets settled in and is asked to sign the guest book. He soon realizes that there are only two names signed in the guest book. They seem awfully familiar but he can't remember where they are from. She tells him that they are still there. They settle down to drink tea and have a conversation.
The climax is when the landlady says, "I stuff all my little pets after they pass away."
Billy says that the tea tastes like bitter almonds and the landlady says that the two names are from 2-3 years ago.
The resolution is that the landlady is actually crazy and poisons all of her guests with her tea and then stuffs them. The other two names are now dead and Billy is next.
The conflict is that Billy needs a place to stay. The theme is don't trust everyone you meet.
