  • Trenches were long, narrow ditches that were dug into the ground by infantry soldiers at the Western front. They would occupy them for weeks at a time, to be protected from machine gun fire and artillery attack from the air. To protect the soldiers below, there would be piles of wood or sandbags filled with earth and mud. Soldier had to suffer though both extremely hot and extremely cold weather. Many soldiers found themselves having to share these trenches with disease spreading rats. They stole food rations and caused damage by chewing through clothing and haversacks. The made the trenches even harder and more unsanitary to live in. Some of them were reported to grow as large as cats. To get rid of this problem, soldiers kept a dog around to clear the trenches and prevent them from being overrun.
  • Dugouts were used many times during the war as protection. There were two different types of these dugouts. Front line dugouts provided protection, but not a direct hit from artillery shelling. There were other German ones that could be up to 15 m below the ground, and those were the ones that were too well constructed to be damaged by shell fire.
  • Soldiers fought in the war using a wide range of weapons, from personal guns to pistols and rifles, to larger weapons like machine guns. New machines were being developed all the time to overcome the difficult conditions of battle. Most of the new technology was focused on making deadlier weapons for the war.
