Battle of Stones River December 31st, 1862-January 2nd, 1863
The confederates won this battle of the Bull Run. Both sides had 18,000 poorly trained and led troops. Thomas “ Stonewall” led his men in and easily took Bull Run. Winfield Scott’s men was poorly trained and was really slow to line up which aloud the confederates charge and have the Union panic and this led to a disorganized retreat.
Battle of Gettysburg July 1st-3rd, 1863
This was the most important victory for the Union. Grant’s troops the successful ones from tennessee. Grant had a plan which had the Union’s navy poor gunfire “ Bombardment” from the south while Grant sends two division’s north to attack on the fort on February 6.Then with poorly sitting in the fort the confederate general, Lloyd Tilghman, surrendered before the Union army even arrived.
Battle of Spotsylvania Court House May 8th-21st, 1864
This had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides. The Union army repealed two counter attacks from the Confederates. The Confederate general, Braxton Bragg, finally withdraw and that boosted the Union after losing their last battle at Fredericksburg.
Second Battle of Fort Fisher January 13th-15th, 1865
General Lee in high spirits began the second invasion of the North Despite heavy losses the North held their defense and ended Lee’s attempt to invade the North. This battle resulted in the Gettysburg Address and redefined the purpose of the war.
Union won this battle. Both sides had 32,000 casualties. The Confederate General, Robert Lee, tried to lure the Union army South into more favorable conditions and that gave them the victory.
Union won this battle. This was the last stronghold of the Confederacy and was fiercely defended. This was one of the last battles of the war. The Union army also successfully cut off the Confederate’s supply line.
