  • 1. Radicals take control: Lenin is able to gain a massive following of people who demang government reform and are upset with its current leaders.
  • 2. War: In 1917, war broke out, and the already weakened national army had a difficult time fending off the hoards of young men willing to fight for givernment reform.

  • 3. Centralization of Power in a Revolutionary Council Dominated by a Strong Man: Two years after the establishment of the Soviet Union, Vladmir Lenin dies. His successor, Leon Trotsky is assassinated by hitmen hired by Joseph Stalin. Against Lenin's final words, Stalin is able to take power in Russia and rules with an iron fist, using fear tactics to force the population to succumb to his power. This usage of fear to run a communist government later became known as Stalinist Communism.
