Are you saying that Athena's work is better than mine? How do you know that?
This couldn't be better if the Goddess Athena made it for me!
I bet that Athena can't weave better than me!
I an not afraid to challenge you!
Once, there was a young spinner named Arachne, and she was the greatest mortal spinner alive.
Arachne decided to challenge Athena to see who is really the best spinner.
I shall make you the greatest weaver who has ever lived. No one will surpass your skill. The threads that you spin will be finer than silk and amazingly strong. In the early morning, when the dew is wet on the ground, your threads will sparkle like diamonds. You will never go hungry, for weaving will provide you with food. You will pass this talent onto your children. They will all be great weavers, down through the generations. All of this I promise to you, Arachne. Do you accept?
Yes! I would love that gift!
They wove tapestries, and both mortals and gods would judge their works.
Athena chose The Heavens as her theme, and Arachne chose The Gods, depicting all of the cruel and foolish deeds they had committed.
Arachne won the contest, and Athena was upset with Arachne's 'arrogance,' but decides to give her a gift for winning, but she can't reveal she beat a god.
Athena then turned Arachne into the first spider, and still kept her promise, but not in the way Arachne thought.
