  • GRRR!
  • Unlike the previous Pope, Pope Urban II wanted to use his influence to keep Muslim Turks out of the East. He went to Italy and made a stirring speech, telling the people that the Turks were disrespecting the tomb of Christ.
  • His audience were persuaded. They became angry with the Turks at what they had done and wanted them to be stopped.
  • Next, the pope went to Southern France to make a speech to the nobles and church leaders. He said that they needed to stop being enemies with each other and instead, use their skills to fight unbelievers.
  • In his speech, the pope was misleading the people. He told them that if they did good works and fought unbelievers, they would earn salvation. The pope was telling them that if they killed the Turks, they would be saved.
  • The pope's powerful speech had an impact on the people and they shouted, "God wills it! God wills it!" They wanted to please God.
  • The people were sorry for their sins and wept. They accepted a red cross that Christian pilgrims wore. Then they were ready as knights to begin the Crusade.
