  • There were many problems regarding the right of women in 1900-1930. Women were not considered people, they had no voting right, a wife could not divorce her husband, if a man divorce his wife, he got to keep the kids. Women wanted to change this.

  • The Suffragists were women who fought for the rights of women to vote. They made speeches, held protest marches, and held a variety of public mock debates.
  • The Famous Five
  • In the US there was a group called the WCTU. This was a group of women who wanted to change the law and rules on alcohol (Prohibition). Women is both of Canada and the US thought alcohol was evil. It cause many problems for women.

  • Agnes MacPhail was the first female PM in Ontario. She called for a prison reform. She founded an organization that helped woman in prison. She was appointed to the Senate but died before the appointment was fulfilled.
  • Group of 5 women with Emily Murphy. She was the first woman to judge in court. Lawyers challenged her. TFF asked the Supreme Court to see whether women are part of the "persons" in the BNA Act. 3 months later, they decided no. Eventually, they were claimed as persons.
  • In 1916-1940, women gained the right to vote. All these women paved the way for greater participation of women in public and political life.
