  • What was that?!
  • Don´t worry about it!
  • When the Black Death came to Europe, it came on major trade routes by sea and the Silk Road on unassuming carriers.
  • Rats, lots of them, specifically Black Rats, the prefered host of fleas. And while Black Rats carried the disease, it was only indirect. The real vector (animal that carries disease) was the flea, which in turn carried the bacteria that caused the plague, Yersinia Pestis.
  • When the ships and merchants got to Europe, they docked and walked to the streets alongside the rats. That is, if they were alive. Many merchants were bitten by fleas on the journey to Europe and many died for reaching, however, when people looked inside the ships, the fleas jumped on.
  • The Black Death affected everyone, young and old, rich and poor. It was indiscriminate, and no one was safe. It was hard to combat due to the bad hygiene at the time. The disease killed 1/3 of the population and was the worst plague in history,
  • Eventually some newcomers joined Europe: The Norwegian Rats. They outcompeted the Black Rats which migrated to other areas, the fleas leaving with them. Europeans also started gaining immunity to the bacteria Yersinia Pestis, the cause of Black Death, ending its threat in Europe.
  • The Black Death Permanently scarred Europe. It may have ended, but many began to question the ideas of that day, including fuedalism.
