  • 1960By the late 1960s, Black Power came to represent the demand for more immediate violent action to counter American white supremacy.

  • It began after Stokely Carmichael saw the concept of "Black Power" as a means of solidarity between individuals within the movement.
  • The black power movement was caused by perceived failures of the civil rights movement and the turn towards militancy.
  • It began because of the riots of 1964 and 1965 coupled with the assassination of Malcolm X. A split occurred between the non-violent points of view and those who wanted more radical, aggressive policy was characterized by the slogan "Black Power".
