  • Hello Mr. Jacobs. I saw a video about chemical reactions and was wondering what they are exactly?
  • To understand, you must know what chemistry is. Chemistry is the part of science that explores matter's characteristics and how matter interacts with energy. Let's take a walk and explore more about this topic!
  • Chemists study chemical reactions which is when two or more chemicals are mixed. A chemical reaction occurs when a group of elements go through a chemical change, resulting in the formation of a new compound.
  • I am a bit confused... What are the types of chemical reactions?
  • There are multiple types of chemical reactions that include synthesis reactions that occur when two chemicals react together to form a new one. Additionally, when a large compound breaks down into two different substances, it is called a decomposition reaction. Also, Also, when oxygen reacts with another substance to form water and carbon dioxide, it is called a combustion reaction.
  • Definitely!
  • Hmm, interesting. Are there more types?
  • A single displacement reaction is when one compound takes a substance from another compound. Also, a double displacement reaction is when two compounds trade substances. Finally, a photochemical reaction is one in which light particles are involved.
  • Are chemical reactions used in our daily lives? If so, what are some examples?
  • Firstly, photosynthesis allows plants to convert carbon dioxide (harmful gases) and water into food and oxygen for us to breathe. Also, reactions occur during digestion. As soon as you eat, a lot of substances break down sugars and carbs for your body to absorb. Additionally, aerobic cellular respiration is the reaction where energy molecules are mixed with oxygen to release enough energy for our cells to operate.
  • Anaerobic respiration helps cells gain energy when no oxygen is available. Similarly, electrochemical reactions are redox reactions that turn chemical energy to electricity. Finally, combustion is when energetic molecules mix with oxygen and give us CO2 and water.
  • What other reactions are important in the continuation of life on earth?
  • This was a very informative walk today. I have learned so much about chemical reactions and their importance on our daily lives. Thank you so much!
  • My pleasure! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
