- Innocenzo Mazzi grew up in the coastal town of Bacoli, Italy.
- He was born into a family of serf fishermen who barely caught enough fish to make a living.
- When he was 17, Innocenzo's parents sent him to the heart of Naples to seek an apprenticeship as a carpenter.

- One day he noticed a poster that said, "Ellis Island to Open Jan. 1st 1892," and decided to begin his journey to the USA in search of higher wages.
