- Homestead act settlers 160 acres of public land. All the homesteaders had to do was pay a small filing fee and complete five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land.

- The Texas annexation was the 1845 annexation of the Republic of Texas into the United States of America. Texas then became the 28th state of the US.
- An agreement between the US and Mexico in which the US agreed to pay $10 million for a 29,670 square mile portion of Mexico which then became part of New Mexico and Arizona. This purchase was made to complete the transcontinental railroad.
