- Rome has gotten previously sacked in 387BC at the hands of the Gauls from France. They defeated Rome and Rome was forced to pay a ransom to get the Gauls to leave. Rome was also suffering from a plague and physical and political decline. Later, they were attacked by the invaders on the aristocratic residences when they were in a terrible situation.
- The Visigoths started to rise dramatically from376AD, due to the rapid development of technology and sophistication. Its influence was greater than Rome. Because the Visigoths were looking to expand territories, Rome was one of their targets.
- In 401AD, Alaric began his first invasion of Italy, the heart of the western Roman empire, but was defeated by Roman general Flavius Stilicho. The Visigoths went on their second attempt to Italy. Romans had a garrison of less than 1000 men when Alaric had an army of 40000.
