Storyboard Text

  • Hello there, I'm professor Neil, and I'm going to be explaining how to correctly interact with someone in the deaf community.
  • Whenever you interact with someone in the deaf community, there are certain things you should do and shouldn't do to correctly interact with them. Deaf people have a different way of communication, so you should try to be polite to them, and interact in the way that they understand you, mostly using ASL.
  • When you interact with a deaf person, the first thing you should do is to introduce yourself. You can say in ASL "Hello, how are you today?"
  • Hello, my name is Lila, what's your name? How are you doing? I'm fine, thank you.
  • Hello, my nameis Elaine, what's your name? How are you doing? I'm fine too, thank you.
  • However, you do not want to do or say anything inappropriate to them. Don't say, "Can you hear me?", "How did you become deaf?" or "How do you learn to read lips?" And don't be impatient, speak loudly, or act rudely.
  • These kinds of actions are impolite, unkind, and unprofessional. So make sure that you practice speaking in ASL, and be in control of what you are saying. That way, you can act with someone correctly in the deaf community.
  • Now, when your are about to conclude a conversation and you want to say goodbye, say "It was nice to meet you". Spell out their name, and then say "Goodbye" using your left hand.
  • Well, It was nice to meet you Elaine, see you later, goodbye.
  • It was nice to meet you too, Lila, goodbye.
