  • Erie Canal (1800s)
  • Hey, how're we going to get to Lake Erie. Honestly let's just go by wagon, I feel that's easier.
  • Nah, I think we should go by water. It's cheaper and faster. Let's go through the Erie Canal
  • Erie Canal (Present Day)
  • Hey how are we going to get to Buffalo?
  • I have an idea let's take that ferry to save money.
  • Steam Locomotive
  • Hey we need to get down south quick to make some trades.
  • I have an idea. let's take the steam locomotive I heard its pretty fast to travel in.
  • The construction of the Erie Canal began in 1817 and was opened in its entirety in 1825. The canal gave the opportunity for people to travel long distances in shorter time. Compared to traveling via dirt road, boats could travel the Erie Canal in 9 days whereas it took 15-45 days via a wagon with horses. Plus, it costs way more to travel by dirt road, costing $100 per ton compared to $6 per ton for boats traveling the canal.
  • Steamship
  • Hey would you like to come along the steamship. I need help transporting these goods plus i need to speak with the general down south.
  • Sure. I heard traveling in these is quite fast.
  • The Erie Canal is still used to this day for many purposes and one big one is travel. It is also still used for commercial purposes. Back in the day, the canal provided for a direct water route to the Midwest which influenced emigration, causing people to move westward from New York. The canal has been in continual operation since 1825.
  • Railroad
  • The steam locomotive influenced westward expansion by revolutionizing transportation. It reduced travel time, increased the flow of goods, and opened up new markets, allowing people to easily move west and settle there.
  • Telegraph
  • Let's send them a telegraph. This way they'll get the information fast in order to prepare for the attack.
  • Mr. President there's going to be an attack by the Native Americans at one of the military posts. We should inform the military about the attack.
  • The steam ship influenced westward expansion significantly. It provided a more efficient and faster mode of transportation compared to traditional sailing ships, enabling people to travel longer distances and settle in new territories. It made the transportation of goods faster, made remote areas accessible, boosted the economy with more trading, and allowed for an improved way of communication.
  • The expansion of the railway network facilitated migration and the growth of new communities, helping to settle and develop the western territories. It provided for transportation, economic development, increased settlement, and government land sales.
