The Nationalists, who favored the strong government Became known as Federalists.
Many were not happy with the Constitution. They became known as Antifederalists.
Antifederalists argued that the Constitution did not protect the rights of Americans from the government. Thomas Jefferson, who was not an Antifederalist, said that their should be a bill of rights to protect the people.
Freedom of Religion, was one of the rights Antifederalists believed should be protected.
Trial by a jury was another right that Antifederalists wanted to ensure the protection of individual rights.
Freedom of speech and the press would be protected by the Bill of Rights.
With the addition of the Bill of Rights the United States Constitution was ratified and became the law of the United States.
