In this chapter Kino, Juana, and baby Coyotito were in their brush house when they noticed a scorpion going down the rope of the baby's hanging box. Kino tried to catch it, but the scorpion fell on Coyotito and stung him. They went to the doctor in the village but he refused their service.
In this chapter, the family went on Kino's canoe passed down from his grandfather. They wanted to capture a pearl so they could pay the doctor to treat Coyotito's sting. Kino finds a big pearl that he calls the Pearl of the World and Coyotito's swelling went away.
In this chapter Kino hid the pearl in the back of the house where he was telling his brother everything he would buy with the pearl. The doctor and priest came to visit but Kino told him that Coyotito was fine. Later that night someone came to steal the pearl but did not succeed in their plan.
In this chapter, Kino went into town to sell his pearl to the pearl dealers. When he went there they offered him only a little bit of money for his pearl, so Kino left and decided he wanted to go sell his pearl in the capital. Juan Tomas warned him about this and Juana wants to destroy the pearl.
In this chapter, Juana tried to throw the pearl back into the sea, but Kino stopped her by kicking and punching her. Then, he killed a man who tried to attack him and someone caught their house on fire. Later, Juan Tomas hid the family in his house and told everyone that they have left.
In this chapter, Juana and Kino were still hiding in Juan's house when they noticed that there were trackers outside searching for them. Then, they went outside to hide, but the trackers were nearby sleeping. Kino decided that he would go and attack the man with the rifle, but they all woke up because of Coyotito's cry. They thought it was a coyote, so the man started shooting his rifle and it hit Coyotito. Then Kino was able to kill all three of the trackers so they went back to the town and beach where they put the pearl back in the water.
