President Polk wanted to peacefully purchase California and New Mexico. He sent John Slidell to discuss purchasing the territory, but Santa Anna refused.
Polk sent General Zachary Taylor and 4,000 men to march to the Rio Grande. Mexico saw this as an act of aggression.
America provoked Mexico into attacking. Polk said Mexico was “killing Americans on American soil” as a claim for war.

New Mexico and California fell, with no bloodshed in New Mexico. By the end of the war, American casualties totaled 13,000 while Mexican casualties totaled 25,000.
