- Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard of Adarlan offered Celaena a chance for freedom. She must compete with other trained men to become the King's Champion. If Celaena wins, she can be set free.
- Celaena is to be trained by Captain Westfall until the finale of the competition.
- Meanwhhile...another ruthless competitor is climbing up the ladder by mutilating the other competitors. And there's a pattern.
- One night, Elena (first Queen of Adarlan) appears in Celaena's room. She warns her that something unwelcome was in the glass castle. Celaena then starts to investigate secretly.
