Storyboard Text

  • After the Civil war, the U.S. entered the Reconstruction era. Attempting to rebuild the south, some changes were made, and were put into law (amendments). The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments helped piece together this country,
  • All slaves were ecstatic about the passing of this amendment because they were free, but their excitement ended quickly when black codes were created. They tried to limit former slaves' freedom.

  • WHAT!? No?! The new 13th amendment has gotten rid of slavery everywhere in the U.S.... How will I ever make money now?

  • Though the 13th amendment was ratified, colored individuals still faced segregation or the separation of whites and blacks. this was also known as Jim Crow Laws. 
  • White Bathrooms
  • The passing of the 14th amendment gave all persons born in the U.S. citizenship, including former slaves. They all had equal protection of the laws, and were all guaranteed unalienable rights. No state or legislature could deny, take away, or deprive any former slave of these rights.

  • I actually am allowed to be here, you can't deny me my rights. The 14th amendment has been ratified... catch up.
  • Following after the 14th amendment, the 15th amendment guaranteed the right to vote for all male citizens. This right could not be denied based on someone's race.

  • It's cool that colored men can vote now!
  •  To rap this all up, the ratification of all these amendments was an effort to ensure equality for former slaves. They still had many hardships after the ratification, like segregation, black codes, Jim Crow's Laws, and some people still hated the idea of slaves being free. And though it took some time for people to actually recognize the laws, colored people slowly gained respect.
